Last updated: October 2026. All specs are for men's US size 10.

There are hundreds of basketball shoes out there, and the marketing makes them all sound perfect. The truth is that there is no single best shoe. There is a best shoe for you, and it depends on how you play, the shape of your feet, where you play and how much you want to spend.

This guide walks through the five questions that matter most. Answer them and you'll narrow hundreds of choices down to a handful.

1. How do you play?

Think about what you do most on the court.

  • Quick guards and slashers need grip, a low and stable base, and light weight. Firm, thin cushioning gives better court feel. Examples: Nike Sabrina 3, Nike Kobe 6 Protro.
  • Wings and all-around players need a balance of cushioning, support and speed. Examples: Nike KD 18, Jordan Luka 4.
  • Big men and heavier players need lots of impact protection, a wide base and strong support. Weight matters less. Examples: Nike LeBron 22, Nike G.T. Jump 2.

Your size matters as much as your position. A 220-pound guard may want a more cushioned shoe than a 150-pound forward.

2. What shape are your feet?

Fit is the most important thing about a basketball shoe. A great shoe that doesn't fit will feel worse than an average shoe that does.

  • Length: You want about a thumb's width (around half an inch) between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. Many basketball shoes run a little small, so read reviews or our shoe pages before you buy.
  • Width: Many performance shoes run narrow. If your feet are wide, look for shoes that reviewers say fit wide, or brands like New Balance that sell wide sizes. See our best shoes for wide feet.
  • Heel: Your heel shouldn't lift when you walk or jump. Heel slip leads to blisters and makes the shoe feel unstable.

Try shoes on late in the day, with the socks you play in.

3. Where do you play?

  • Indoor courts: Almost any basketball shoe works. Softer rubber grips wood floors well but wears out fast outside.
  • Outdoor courts: Asphalt and concrete wear rubber down fast. Look for thicker, harder outsoles. Many top indoor shoes are not made for outdoors at all. See our best outdoor basketball shoes.
  • Dusty gyms: If your gym floor is rarely cleaned, choose a shoe that reviewers say grips well on dust, like the Adidas D.O.N. Issue 6.

4. How much support do you need?

Many players think a high-top is the only way to protect their ankles. But a 1993 study in the American Journal of Sports Medicine found no significant difference in ankle sprain rates between players in high-top and low-top shoes. What matters more is a stable base, a firm heel and a fit that keeps your foot from sliding. Read more in our ankle support guide.

5. What is your budget?

You can get a great shoe for under $100. Cheaper "team" models like the Nike Precision 7 score almost as well as $150 shoes in lab tests. More money usually buys fancier foam, premium materials and a famous name. See our best basketball shoes under $100.

How to read our shoe pages

Every shoe page on Your Basketball Shoes shows:

  • Rating (out of 5): Based on real reviews from RunRepeat, The Hoops Geek and the r/BBallShoes Shoe Database. When no published rating exists, we estimate from the closest versions of the same shoe line.
  • Weight: For one men's US size 10 shoe. Lighter usually means faster but less protective.
  • Photos: A side view of each colorway.

Quick checklist before you buy

  1. Does it suit how I play and my size?
  2. Do reviewers say it fits my foot shape?
  3. Will I mostly play indoors or outdoors?
  4. Does it have a stable base and a firm heel?
  5. Is it in my budget, and is last year's version cheaper?

When to replace your shoes

Basketball shoes don't last forever. Replace them when the traction pattern is worn smooth, the cushioning feels flat, or the heel counter has gone soft. If you start slipping on a court where you used to grip, or your feet and knees ache more than usual, it is probably time.
