Guards live on quick first steps, hard stops and change-of-direction moves. That means a guard shoe needs three things before anything else: traction that bites, a low and stable base so you don't roll over the side, and a fit that holds your foot in place. Light weight helps too, because you'll be running the floor more than anyone.
Big, soft cushioning matters less for most guards. A lot of the best guard shoes feel firm and close to the floor on purpose, so you can feel the court and react faster.
All weights below are for one men's US size 10 shoe, and prices are launch retail.
Our rating: 4.6/5 (RunRepeat lab score 92/100) · Weight (men's US 10): 12.8 oz · Launch price: $135
The Sabrina 3 is our top guard shoe. RunRepeat scored it 92 out of 100, with 94s for both speed and stability, and described it as made for "guards and other light and nimble players." It is flexible, low to the ground and locks the foot in well. RunRepeat notes that it runs slightly small, so try it on or consider a half size up if you are between sizes.
Skip it if you play mostly outdoors or have wide feet. Its rubber and toebox are made for indoor floors.
Our rating: 4.5/5 (r/BBallShoes Shoe Database overall 89/100) · Weight (men's US 10): 12.1 oz · Launch price: $190
There is a reason 88 NBA players wear the Kobe 6 Protro. The r/BBallShoes Shoe Database rates it 89 overall and 89 for guards, with strong traction and lockdown scores. It is about 12.1 oz, has a low collar and fits snug. The biggest problem is buying one, because popular colorways sell out and resale prices climb.
Our rating: 4.5/5 (r/BBallShoes Shoe Database overall 91/100) · Weight (men's US 10): 12.2 oz · Launch price: $180
The Kobe 5 Protro is the other Kobe that NBA guards love: 29 players wear it, second only to the Kobe 6. The r/BBallShoes database rates it 91 overall, one of the highest scores in its whole list, and gives it a 93 for lockdown. It fits very snug and narrow, so it is best for players with slim feet. Like the 6, it isn't meant for outdoor courts.
Our rating: 4.7/5 (RunRepeat lab score 93/100) · Weight (men's US 10): 13.3 oz · Launch price: $120
Donovan Mitchell's shoe is the best guard shoe under $150. RunRepeat gave it a 93 and called its traction "phenomenal," even on dusty courts, which is a big deal if you play in gyms that are not swept often. It is fairly light at 13.3 oz and offers great support. It needs a short break-in period before it feels its best.
Our rating: 4.2/5 (RunRepeat lab score 85/100) · Weight (men's US 10): 12.2 oz · Launch price: $190
The G.T. Cut 3 is one of the lightest shoes on our site at 12.2 oz, and it uses Nike's bounciest foam, ZoomX. RunRepeat praised its "exceptionally light and nimble" feel and strong energy return, and it scored 92 for speed. Cade Cunningham and Jrue Holiday are among the 19 NBA players wearing it. RunRepeat's main complaint is that the upper doesn't hold the foot as well as expected on hard cuts, and it is not for outdoor courts.
Our rating: 4.1/5 (The Hoops Geek expert rating 8.2/10 (11 reviews)) · Weight (men's US 10): about 12.3 oz (estimate) · Launch price: $124.99
The Ja 3 is a fast, low shoe with a ZoomX midsole, and it is a best seller at Nike right now. The Hoops Geek's 11 reviews average 8.2 out of 10, with traction as its best feature at 9.0. Reviewers say it fits narrow and that lateral containment could be better, so wide-footed players should try a half size up.
Our rating: 4.2/5 (The Hoops Geek expert rating 8.5/10 (5 reviews)) · Weight (men's US 10): about 12.4 oz (estimate) · Launch price: $149.99
Steph Curry's shoes are known for grip, and the Curry 12 continues that. The Hoops Geek describes it as "the perfect shoe for players who need elite traction on clean courts." Its forefoot is a little narrow, and it isn't recommended for outdoor play.
Our rating: 4.2/5 (The Hoops Geek expert rating 8.5/10 (7 reviews)) · Weight (men's US 10): not published · Launch price: $139.99
Kyrie Irving's Anta Kai 2 is on the list of the NBA's 10 most-worn shoes. The Hoops Geek rates it 8.5 from 7 reviews and calls it best for "shifty guards who want a fast, responsive shoe." It fits narrow to average feet best.
Our rating: 4.3/5 (RunRepeat lab score 87/100) · Weight (men's US 10): 12.0 oz · Launch price: $80
If you don't want to spend $130 or more, the Precision 7 is a great guard shoe for $80. RunRepeat scored it 87, called it "amazingly lightweight," and said it is fine for streetball. At 12.0 oz it is one of the lightest shoes we list. It runs narrow.
For most guards, the Sabrina 3 is the best all-around choice. If you love the Kobe feel and can find a pair near retail, get a Kobe 6 Protro. On a budget, the D.O.N. Issue 6 at $120 or the Precision 7 at $80 deliver most of the same speed for much less.
